MedSpark Medical Product Design and Development

MedSpark, a San Luis Obispo based biomedical engineering company, is currently seeking a talented part-time/contract mechanical design engineer to assist in the development of new medical devices. MedSpark improves the quality of people’s lives through collaboration with medical professionals to bring their product ideas to life.

You will be part of a small and nimble team that conceptualizes, develops, and proves-out designs that make an impact on the world of medicine. Your primary role is driving conceptualization, development, and prototyping of new product concepts, focused on inventive uses of new and existing technologies that open up entirely new product concepts. Work hours are flexible, based on need and your availability: anytime from 9am thru midnight, 7-days a week.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Must be Highly Creative and Thrive in an ‘Outside-The-Box’ Environment.
  • Develop and Execute Product Development Plans.
  • Translate Ideas and Concepts into Virtual Prototypes using SolidWorks.
  • Design Products for Efficient Manufacturability and Assembly.
  • Integrate Industrial Design Techniques to Create Designs with Improved Aesthetics, Ergonomics, and Usability.
  • Select and Integrate Proper Materials, Components, Technologies, and Assembly/Manufacturing Processes.
  • Build Prototypes (e.g. 3D Printing, Machining, Welding, Forming, Soldering, etc.)
  • Participate on Cross-Functional Teams to Develop New Innovative Product Ideas.
  • Collaborate with Clinicians, Patients, Manufacturing, and Marketing to Define and Evaluate New Innovative Product Concepts.

Required Proficiency, Experience, and Knowledge:

  • Minimum 1-Year’s Experience:
    – SolidWorks (3D Modelling, Organic/Freeform Surfacing, Manufacturing Drawings, Complex Assemblies).
    – Develop Plans and Documentation for Manufacturing, Testing, and Product Usage.
    – Assemble and Build Prototypes (e.g. 3D Printing, Machining, Welding, Forming, Soldering, etc.)
    – Select and Integrate Proper Materials, Components, Technologies, and Assembly/Manufacturing Processes.
    – Design Products for Efficient Manufacturability and Assembly.
  • Outstanding Problem Solving and Organizational skills.
  • Strong Initiative with Ability to Independently Create and Execute Development Plans.
  • Desire and Capacity to Dive Deep on New Technologies as Required.

Preferred Proficiency, Experience, and Knowledge:

  • 5+ Years’ Experience in the Above.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Biomedical Engineering (BSBE), Industrial Design (ID), and/or Equivalent Experience.
  • Medical Device Development Industry Experience.
  • Intellectual Property Development (e.g. Patent Writing, Patent Landscape Research, Patentability, FTO).
  • Hands-On Manufacturing Experience (Conventional and CNC Mill, Lathe, EDM, Grinding, Injection Molding, Metal/Plastic Forming, Composites, etc.)
  • CNC Programming.
  • Design of Fixtures and Tooling for Various Manufacturing Processes (e.g. Machining, Welding, Injection Molding, Compression Molding, Vacuum Forming, etc.)
  • Gaining Regulatory Approvals (FDA, UL, etc.)
  • Reverse Engineering (e.g. 3D Laser Scanning, Calipers, Micrometers, photogrammetry, etc.)
  • Experience with Multiple CAD Software Packages (e.g. Unigraphics, Inventor, ProE, Catia, etc.)
